Evolver is seeking a Systems Engineer to work in Suitland, MD.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Systems Engineer will assist the Tier II/III support team and will responsible for IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS) running Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for our government clients on a 10 year contract supporting the U.S. Department of Commerce Census Bureau.  


The implementation is to support Linux clusters containing 3 to 100 servers, and file systems that are between 10TB and 1GB in size. Experience is needed in managing the configuration to maintain performance as the capacity and number of servers accessing the storage is grown in small increments. The storage system will leverage existing storage virtualized by IBM SVC clusters. 



The Systems Engineer will provide the following functions:

  • Support Operation Tier ll/III team by participating in the development processes, procedures and tools for standardized implementation of GPFS following industry best practices; 
  • Analysis and reporting on the file system usage including usage capacity, file age, and file usage;
  • Develop and assist in implementation of automated monitoring, capacity management, event and performance management processes using existing Census support systems;
  • Performance analysis, reporting, and system tuning to maintain low file access latency;
  • Coordinate Files and Meta-Data backup and restore support with the enterprise backup team/system for customers;
  • Configuration changes to grow or shrink the system as needed;
  • Update the GPFS file system to new releases when issued and implement patch updates as released to address security alerts, bug fixes, and feature improvements;
  • Assist server and application administrators in overall system performance tuning for systems;
  • Provide status reports, documentation and operational input to management via meetings/email.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

Candidate must have the following knowledge, experience, and abilities:

  • Must have a minimum of 8 years of IT experience of which includes system administration and programming in Windows and Unix/Linux environment;
  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science/Engineering/ Information Systems or related discipline desired (In-Lieu-of the education 12 years of total full time IT experience required);
  • Candidate must have 4 or more years experience supporting storage and server support consisting of 20 or more servers and 250TB of capacity in a single system.

  • Candidate must have 4 or more years experience supporting server clusters consisting of 20 or more servers and 250TB of capacity in a single system.

Training and Certifications (required and desired)

  • Candidate is desired to have GPFS experience.
